GW2 is basically the same way, with the exception of the 'living story' which is content released between sections, free for people who played when the content was released but cost money for new players. ~2 months in WoW/FF14 = 2 expansions with of content in GW2, forever unlocked.
Race is just for the appearance and main story, it doesn't affect your build at all. For the build look at snowcrows/metabattle/hard stuck. Before 80 your build doesn't really matter and you will play the strongest weapon you dropped. Meta for ranger is Long Bow and axe/axe right now
The cloud skip is insane. Kinda crazy how easy 2-2 becomes with that. Its already so much easier with the official skip for the temple with the rolling gong at the end. That was the true pain back then. The walljump skip in 2-3 doesnt seem that great to me if you spend there up to 5 minutes.
